I have just seen “memories of a geisha” tonight. It is such an awesome piece of art that I could feel my heart beating at the end of the movie.
Though it seems weird to see Chinese actresses play geishas and speak English to one another, the casts surely have done wonderful jobs interpreting Japanese geishas. I would not say that Zhang Zi Yi has done a perfect demonstration of dancing and gestures of a geisha. However, her performance surely is breathtaking at some scenes. I think that she has a gift to interpret any role through a unite scope. The director, Rob Marshall, is a wonderful story teller. He does create a world which is quite Japanese to me, considering he is an American. In addition, the music composed by John Williams, who also wrote the sound track of “Star Wars”, is really moving. It does enhance the emotions of the audience.
However, I do wonder that if the true Japanese geishas would like this movie. After all, the main characters are Chinese.
