Mahler Symphony No. 6

I went to BSO for Mahler Symphony No.6 tonight. Surprisingly, it was better than I had expected.

I used to regard Mahler’s music as noisy and boring. (Pardon me for my ignorance.) However, I must confess that I was wrong. I suppose that the prejudice results form the fact that his music is so crave and deep for regular sound systems to interpret. Only the music hall and the live orchestra can present the profoundness and complexity of his works.

Frankly, I dosed off during the second movement. However, while the low movement was presented, I suddenly felt spirited. The melodies were elegantly conducted. Some subtle “intonations” of the notes were magically shaped. I felt as the conductor had been dancing with the scores and bringing the instruments into organisms of thoughts.

The intense finale surely is the climax of the piece. The wooden floor of BSO transmitted the energy of the music. The sensation of basso penetrated my soles and ran into my body. Furthermore, the horns were powerful yet fine tuned. The oboe was incredibly delightful. The bass drummer was terrific. He hit the notes right into the spots passionately. I also noticed that even the harps sounded like “Mahler.” Two harpers fingered the strings strongly enough to perform solo.

I am really glad that I had the chance to get closer to Mahler through one of the best orchestras in the world.

P.S. In the near future, the musical school of BU is going to perform No. 1. If I can manage to squeeze some time, I might attend the concert.
